In the Airbus there are no throttles; instead there are thrust levers. When the autothrust is OFF, the thrust lever position directly controls engine thrust however, with autothrust engaged the thrust levers remain in a predetermined detent while the engine thrust is allowed to vary within a given range. Unlike Boeing's autothrottle, Airbus' autothrust does not automatically move the thrust levers to reflect engine thrust. Hence the name autothrust and not autothrottle.
