Dense smoke from unusually large forest fires on the island of Madeira creeps onto the airport as we fly the downwind leg for Funchal's runway 05. At this airport, a VOR instrument approach is followed by a visual circuit; if visibility is lost the approach must be discontinued. Today, because of the smoke a successful arrival wasn't ensured. In the end, despite the smoke and gusty wind conditions an on-schedule arrival was achieved. A319 CS-TTB from Lisbon with 126 "happy-once-on-the-ground" passengers.
