The stars Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Megrez, Alioth, Mizar and Alkaid together make up the constellation of Ursa Major (also called Big Dipper). This constellation is special because the line that extends five times the distance from Merak to Dubhe allows easy identification of Polaris, the North Star (in this pic, the one close to the left edge near the bottom). A320 CS-TNU from Sal to Lisbon with 155 passengers on board and strong navigation backup.

Cold Fuel

Flying back from Christmas in Moscow, here is A319 CS-TTQ's Fuel page on the System Display about 4 hours into the flight. We've been exposed to very low SAT's (static air temperatures) for most of the flight (-67ºC in this pic) which have been slowly removing heat from the fuel in the wings. Due to the relatively small amount held in each outer tank (slightly over 700 kg), this fuel cools at a greater rate and requires monitoring. Engines, in general, don't like frozen fuel. Jet A-1 fuel freezes below -47ºC but since we fuelled in Russia, our fuel is TS-1 which freezes below -50ºC.

Scandic Cyclone

On the ground in Oslo in A319 CS-TTP. Everything normal except maybe the exceptionally low QNH of 986 hPa. We were in fact very close to the center of a low pressure system also called depression or cyclone. Bad weather is associated to these systems and today was no exception with strong winds and heavy rain present throughout the approach to runway 19R. (Three days later in Stockholm the QNH fell further to 975 hPa which is, I believe an all time low for me).

Almost LVTO

Ready for departure on Copenhagen's foggy runway 22R. The present RVR (Runway Visual Range) is 500m which is not low enough for this takeoff to be called an LVTO (Low Visibility Takeoff) for which the RVR must be below 400m. We are certified for takeoff's in RVR's as low as 125m which is pretty exciting stuff. A320 CS-TNV with 116 passengers and 6 crew on board bound to Lisbon.

This is the A319/320/321 flight simulator; its an amazing machine. Twice a year, every airline pilot is required to demonstrate proficiency in the handling of all sorts of emergency situations. These range from simple system failures to the most complex of situations. In all cases, a safe landing is required usually in very adverse weather conditions. It can be a quite stressful place but it is also one where skills are enhanced and much is learned. Flight simulators are a key element in making airline flying as safe as it is. I was in next for my 4 hour checkride.

Workload is relatively high on African night flights; the weather can be demanding in the vicinity of the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone), there is alot of traffic to be aware of which requires extensive use of the IFBP (Inflight Broadcast Procedure) and enroute alternates are few and far between. Its great! Especially when you look to the West and see images like this one.

The morning had started flying from Funchal to Lisbon then onto Rome and back only to be greeted upon arrival at Lisbon with winds gusting from the north at 40 knots. This is when Lisbon's runway 35 comes in handy. Life on the line continues..

Its a pure coincidence that I got this shot of the more elusive "anti-crepuscular rays" only a few days after posting the "Crepuscular Rays" pic. The shafts of shade result from the blockage of sunlight by these Altocumulus clouds. The rays are actually parallel to each other but have a converging effect due to perspective. A320 CS-TNR at FL360 from Lisbon to Oslo.

Crepuscular Rays

Crepuscular rays beaming through the clouds over Caparica seen from A319 CS-TTP in the EKMAR hold at FL100. Upon leaving Bamako, the Lisbon forecast was for thunderstorms which led us to take on 300 kg's of extra fuel to allow for a short holding in case a CB found its way onto the airport (as they usually do). The forecast was correct and that extra fuel made the difference between happy customers at destination or not-so-happy ones at the alternate (Porto in this case) as arrival at Lisbon coincided with a runway change and 10 min of controlled chaos.

Zagreb Inspection

The preflight inspection is an important part of flight preparation. It consists of visually checking the aircraft to ensure that all is as it should be. Here I was, doing just that to A320 CS-TQD at Zagreb before the flight to Lisbon. The yellow and black assembly connected to the airplane by a cable is called a Ground Power Unit (GPU). Its purpose is to provide electricity to parked airplanes.

Rearviewing

Heavy snow in Zurich during our approach a while earlier in A320 CS-TNG. At the moment we are in line for de-icing prior to departure. It will add up to a 30 min wait. Engine 2 (the other one) is shut down, we are cross feeding and flaps are retracted until the runway holding point to avoid getting ice and snow in the flap mechansim. Weighing over 70 tons we are going to need all of the 27000 lbs of thrust provided by each of the beautiful CFM56-5B4 engines to safely get airborne from Zurich's "not-so-long" runway 28.

After a low visibility take off from Lisbon's runway 21 in A319 CS-TTK, the "Cristo Rei" monument and the southern pillar of the "25 de Abril" bridge could be seen protruding from the dense fog. A NOTOC (NOtification TO Captain) is a document meant to inform the Captain of any special load and/or dangerous good in the aircraft's cargo compartment. In this case, 125 kg of fresh fish is being loaded into A321 CS-TJG in Dakar along with...a cat. Both of these are quite normal cargo, however seeing them together on the NOTOC is a bit unusual. Fortunately the fish is in the front and too far away for the cat in the back to smell.. Otherwise it might have been a long 4 hour flight back to Lisbon for whiskers.

Thrust Levers

In the Airbus there are no throttles; instead there are thrust levers. When the autothrust is OFF, the thrust lever position directly controls engine thrust however, with autothrust engaged the thrust levers remain in a predetermined detent while the engine thrust is allowed to vary within a given range. Unlike Boeing's autothrottle, Airbus' autothrust does not automatically move the thrust levers to reflect engine thrust. Hence the name autothrust and not autothrottle. This very brave cat (can you see him?) decided to cross taxiway "F" right in front of our A320 CS-TNG almost bringing us to a halt. We had just landed on runway 35 at Porto (LPPR) incoming from Paris Orly (LFPO). In the background A330-200 CS-TOH was lined up and ready for departure.
